Quoi de Neuf | August 2026

Dear Members and Friends,

August is often seen as a quieter month in France, when many people take the opportunity to enjoy a well-deserved summer break. Here in Brisbane, however, the Alliance Française continues to offer a rich programme of language, culture and community events, making this an excellent time to stay connected with French language and culture.

Our school remains at the heart of our activities. There is still time to join Session 3 through our five-week mid-session courses, whether you are taking your very first steps in French, looking to improve your existing skills or learning the language for a specific purpose. If you thought you had missed the start of the session, this is the perfect opportunity to join us.

August also brings another outstanding cultural programme. On 19 August, our CinéClub returns to SAE with Agnès Varda's timeless masterpiece, Cléo de 5 à 7, one of the defining works of the French New Wave. Earlier in the month, from 30 July to 8 August, we are once again delighted to support the New Farm Queer Film Festival, where French cinema will be strongly represented with four remarkable films, including the highly anticipated Jim Queen and Enzo

At the end of the month, on 29 and 30 August, we invite you to discover The Silent Cry of Flowers, a powerful contemporary dance creation from New Caledonia presented at the Thomas Dixon Centre. Looking a little further ahead, September will also mark the launch of our photography competition celebrating two hundred years of photography, as well as the New Caledonia Film Festival at GOMA, both of which promise to be wonderful opportunities to discover new artistic talent from the French-speaking Pacific.

August will also be a month of farewells as we say goodbye to two valued members of our team. We warmly thank Georgie for the enthusiasm and kindness with which she welcomed our students over the past year, and wish her every success with her studies. We also extend our sincere thanks to Zoé, whose creativity and dedication have played a major role in strengthening the Alliance's communication and contributing to the success of this year's Alliance Française French Film Festival in Brisbane. As she begins an exciting new position with a communications company, we wish her every success in this new chapter of her career.

August will also bring several exclusive giveaways for our community. Throughout the month, thanks to our valued distribution partners, you will have the opportunity to win double passes to three outstanding French films that were all part of the Alliance Française French Film Festival 2026 line-up: Case 137 (Dossier 137)The Party's Over (Classe Moyenne) and Maigret and the Dead Lover (Maigret et le Mort Amoureux). Keep an eye on our social media channels for your chance to enter.

Thank you, as always, for your loyalty and your invaluable support. I also encourage you to keep following and sharing our activities on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. Every like, comment and share helps us reach new audiences and continue promoting the French language and French-speaking cultures throughout Brisbane.

Chers membres, chers amis,
