Dear members and friends of Alliance Française de Brisbane,
As Jean-Philippe is still enjoying some well-deserved time away, I’m delighted to be writing to you for this month’s edition of our newsletter.
September is shaping up to be a particularly busy and exciting month at Alliance Française de Brisbane, with a programme that brings together French language learning, cinema, literature, cultural events and our ongoing connections with the wider Francophone world.
For those looking to start or continue their French journey, Session 4 is now open for registration. We are also getting ready for our Spring Workshops, taking place during the school holidays, with a range of intensive language and cultural workshops for adults and children. And if you’ve ever wondered what an AFB class is like, our Trial Classes will be taking place during the school holidays.
There is plenty happening on the cultural side too. Our CineClub continues to bring French cinema to Brisbane audiences, while our Say Cheese competition gives you another chance to engage with our community and celebrate all things French.
We are also proud to support Our Ocean, a special film event highlighting the importance of protecting our oceans, and to partner for the first time with the Woman, Life, Freedom International Film Festival. As part of this new partnership, Alliance Française de Brisbane will present the Alliance Française Award, giving us the opportunity to recognise a film from the festival’s international selection.
We will also be celebrating the richness of the Pacific with the New Caledonia Film Festival, offering audiences an opportunity to discover more cinema and stories from our neighbouring Francophone Pacific community.
For our book lovers, our next Book Club will focus on Le Soleil des Scorta by Laurent Gaudé. It’s a wonderful opportunity to discover or revisit contemporary French literature while sharing the experience with fellow readers.
This month, we are also delighted to welcome Marion and Ninon to the Alliance Française team. We look forward to introducing them properly and seeing the contribution they will bring to our community.
And, of course, there are plenty of opportunities to win tickets and enjoy some great cultural experiences. Keep an eye out for the giveways: the Fijian Flying Circus by VOU Fiji, celebrating contemporary circus in the Pacific, The Great Arch with Palace Cinema, and La Mer concert with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra .
From language classes to cinema, literature, live performance and our growing network of cultural partnerships, there is always something happening at Alliance Française de Brisbane. I hope this month's programme will inspire you to try something new, join us at an event, discover a new film or simply spend a little more time with French culture.

Chers membres et amis de l’Alliance Française de Brisbane,
Alors que Jean-Philippe profite de quelques jours de repos bien mérités, j’ai le plaisir de prendre la plume pour cette nouvelle édition de notre newsletter.
Le mois de septembre s’annonce particulièrement riche et animé à l’Alliance Française de Brisbane, avec une programmation qui fait la part belle à l’apprentissage du français, au cinéma, à la littérature, aux événements culturels et à nos liens toujours plus étroits avec le monde francophone.
Pour celles et ceux qui souhaitent commencer ou poursuivre leur apprentissage, les inscriptions pour la Session 4 sont désormais ouvertes. Nous préparons également nos Spring Workshops, qui auront lieu pendant les vacances scolaires et proposeront aux adultes comme aux enfants une variété d’ateliers intensifs, linguistiques et culturels. Et si vous souhaitez découvrir l’ambiance de nos cours avant de vous inscrire, nos cours d'essai seront également proposées pendant les vacances scolaires. Restez à l’écoute pour connaître les dates et horaires exacts.
Notre programmation culturelle sera elle aussi particulièrement riche. Le CineClub continue de faire découvrir le cinéma français au public de Brisbane, tandis que notre concours Say Cheese vous donnera une nouvelle occasion de participer à la vie de notre communauté et de célébrer la culture française.
Nous sommes également heureux de soutenir Our Ocean, un événement cinématographique consacré à la protection de nos océans, ainsi que de nous associer pour la première fois au Woman, Life, Freedom International Film Festival. Dans le cadre de ce nouveau partenariat, l’Alliance Française de Brisbane remettra le Prix de l’Alliance Française, qui nous permettra de distinguer un film parmi la sélection internationale du festival.
Le 27 septembre, nous célébrerons également la richesse culturelle du Pacifique avec le New Caledonia Film Festival, une belle occasion de découvrir des films et des histoires issus de notre communauté francophone voisine de Nouvelle-Calédonie.
Pour les amoureux de littérature, notre prochain Book Club aura lieu le 11 septembre autour de Le Soleil des Scorta de Laurent Gaudé. Une belle occasion de découvrir ou redécouvrir la littérature française contemporaine et d’échanger avec d’autres lecteurs.
Nous sommes également ravis d’accueillir ce mois-ci Marion et Ninon au sein de l’équipe de l’Alliance Française. Nous avons hâte de vous les présenter et de voir tout ce qu’elles apporteront à notre communauté.
Et bien sûr, de nombreuses occasions de gagner des places et de profiter d’expériences culturelles vous attendent. Gardez un œil sur nos concours pour le Fijian Flying Circus, qui célèbre le cirque contemporain dans le Pacifique, ainsi que sur nos jeux-concours avec Palace Cinemas pour The Great Arch et La Mer, avec le Queensland Symphony Orchestra.
Des cours de langue au cinéma, en passant par la littérature, les spectacles et nos nombreux partenariats culturels, il se passe toujours quelque chose à l’Alliance Française de Brisbane. J’espère que la programmation de ce mois-ci vous donnera envie de découvrir quelque chose de nouveau, de nous rejoindre lors d’un événement, de voir un nouveau film ou tout simplement de profiter un peu plus de la culture française.

Alliance Française is proud to support Save Our Oceans, an evening of short documentaries by leading French and Australian artists. Presented by Culture Plus and People For Nature, the event brings together art, science and community around a shared cause: the preservation of our oceans. The screening is followed by a panel discussion with ocean experts. Guests can also enjoy a drink and explore a photography exhibition by François Detaille.

Alliance Française partners for the first time with the Woman, Life, Freedom International Film Festival, joining an international programme bringing independent cinema and powerful stories of women, freedom and resistance to audiences across continents. Founded in 2024 and inspired by the Woman, Life, Freedom movement, the festival champions artistic freedom, human rights and social justice through the work of filmmakers challenging censorship worldwide.
As part of this new partnership, AFB will present the Alliance Française Award to one of the festival's nominated films.

Two hundred years ago, photography changed the world forever. This September, we're inviting YOU to be part of the celebration.
Starting 1 September, you can submit a digital photograph to AFB — no theme, no restrictions, just your unique perspective. Winners will be featured across the Alliance Française Australia network and the French Embassy's social media channels.
This will be your chance to discover the talent of up and coming talents from New Caledonia through a series of short films presented on Sunday 27 September at the Australian Cinematheque at GOMA. Experts will be introducing two sessions of films carefully selected, showcasing some of the best young directors of the Pacific. More details coming soon!

Please join us in welcoming Marion to the Alliance Française de Brisbane team! Originally from Lyon, Marion arrived in mid-July and brings a background in Human Resources, having recently made the move into education. As our new Course and Administration Assistant, she'll be one of the friendly faces you'll see at reception during the week, supporting our students and helping our courses run smoothly.
And we're delighted to welcome Ninon, who joined us as an intern in late September. Ninon has just
completed her degree in Economics and Management in Paris and will be with us until the end of February, working on marketing, promoting
our language school and helping run our cultural events.
Another standout film from this year’s Alliance Française French Film Festival is coming back to the big screen!
The Great Arch arrives in cinemas 1 October, bringing to life the near-mythic true story of Johan Otto von Spreckelsen, the little-known Danish architect who beat the world's biggest firms to win the competition to design Paris's Grande Arche, from writer-director Stéphane Demoustier, starring Claes Bang, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Xavier Dolan, Swann Arlaud and Michel Fau.

Get ready for an extraordinary evening of French music, as the QSO presents two special performances of Debussy's La Mer on 4 September.
From gentle tides to stormy swells Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s La Mer captures the ever-shifting moods of the sea.
At the heart of this concert is La Mer by beloved French composer Debussy – a vivid portrait of water in motion inspired by Monet’s seascapes and The Great Wave off Kanagawa.
Australian pianist Stefan Cassomenos then brings warmth and wit in Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No.2 while Australian composer Paul Stanhope offers a contemporary response to the sea with Ocean Planet, a powerful reflection on the beauty and fragility of our oceans.
Then hear Ravel’s Une Barque sur l’ocean, an ode to the serenity yet stormy unpredictability of the ocean.
