MID SESSION 4 – Beginner classes, French for Travel, language workshops and more: REGISTRATION OPEN!

Dear Members and Friends,

November is upon us, and while the end of the year is approaching, nobody seems to have told the Alliance Française de Brisbane that it might be time to slow down. Quite the opposite, in fact!

For those who have been putting off learning French, or who feel their French could do with a little attention before the summer holidays, our Session 4 mid-session courses begin on 9 November. From complete beginners to conversation classes, including French for Travel and revision courses, there is still time to make some progress before the year ends. And for those who prefer to learn French somewhere a little more exotic than a classroom in West End, we are already preparing our next French immersion trip to Nouméa during the Easter holidays. More details will follow, but perhaps it is not too early to start dreaming of New Caledonia.

Our cultural calendar is certainly not taking a holiday either. On 11 November, our CinéClub will present Jouer avec le feu, directed by Delphine and Muriel Coulin and starring the remarkable Vincent Lindon. On 5,6 and 14 November, Brisbane French Theatre returns with La Diagonale, an original comedy performed in French with English surtitles. And on 13 November, the wonderful MZAZA will take us on a musical journey through French, Balkan and Mediterranean influences at the Thomas Dixon Centre. Three very different evenings, and three excellent reasons to leave the house.

I am also delighted to congratulate John Clarke, whose photograph has been selected to represent Brisbane in the national final of our Say Cheese! competition. He will now be competing alongside finalists from 21 other Alliances Françaises across Australia. You can support him by voting on the French Embassy's Instagram account. After all, a little Brisbane pride has never hurt anyone!

Our members will find plenty of opportunities to meet at the Alliance, with our Book Club discussing Maylis Adhémar's Bénie soit Sixtine on 6 November, our Tuesday Game Nights and our Thursday French Chat. Whether you come to discuss literature, practise your French or discover that you are not quite as good at board games as you thought, there is always a good reason to join us.

Thank you, as always, for your loyalty, your enthusiasm and your invaluable support. I look forward to seeing many of you throughout November, whether in a classroom, at a cultural event or simply over a conversation at the Alliance.

Chers membres, chers amis,

The Quiet Son

Directors: Delphine Coulin, Muriel Coulin

Pierre is raising his two sons alone. Louis, the younger, excels in his studies and moves easily through life. Fus, the elder, begins to lose his way. Fascinated by violence and power struggles, he becomes involved with far-right groups whose beliefs stand in stark contrast to his father’s values. Pierre watches helplessly as these new associations gain an increasingly strong hold over his son. Gradually, love gives way to misunderstanding.
