So you’ve decided you’d like to learn French. You’re an absolute beginner, and don’t know where to start. Elementary 1 is the course for you! This course serves as a bienvenue to the French language. Throughout this course, you will discover the beauty of the French language, and cover the basics, such as introducing yourself and others (Bonjour, je m’appelle Jean), spelling and counting (un, deux, trois…), and general greetings and politeness (Salut, s’il vous plait, merci beaucoup). You’ll also learn how to ask a question, how to communicate, and explain why you are learning French.

This course is designed for complete beginners of French, and no prior knowledge is necessary. After completing this course, you can continue your French journey and move on to Elementary 2!

In this 25-hour course, you’ll explore everyday topics like city life, family, and hobbies while mastering key grammar essentials — from adjectives and prepositions to must-know verbs like aller, faire, and prendre. You’ll learn to express opinions, share your tastes, give directions, and react to news — all while building the vocabulary to navigate the city, book accommodations, and chat about personality and pastimes. In this third stage of the Elementary level, students will learn to talk about daily routines, travel plans, and past experiences. The course covers key grammar such as the present tense of common verbs, reflexive verbs, the imperative, the pronouns on and y, and introduces the passé composé. Students will also practice expressing time, obligation, weather, and describing places.

You’ve come this far, and you’ve almost finished the Elementary program! Elementary 5 is designed to go deeper into aspects of topics covered in Elementary 1-4. Touching on travel and vacations, you’ll be able to describe a holiday location and choose your accommodation (Où est le meilleur hôtel à Québec?). You’ll also cover the day-to-day, including talking about the weather (Il pleut depuis deux semaines), food preferences (J’aime les fraises, mais je n’aime pas les pommes), understanding a menu, grocery shopping (Excusez-moi, dans quelle allée se trouve le lait?), and describing sensations and emotions (Quand je pleure, je suis triste et fatigué). Finally, you’ll practise comparing a past situation with the present (Je jouais au golf, mais maintenant, je fais du vélo), and discussing your reading habits.

In the final Elementary level course, it's time to take your French out on the town! Elementary 6 will help you develop the skills to converse whilst shopping and dining out, and to plan your very own soirée. You'll be able to comment on clothes (Quelle jolie chemise rayée!), choose an outfit, and interact with shop assistants (Vous payez par carte?). You’ll learn how to order at a restaurant (Nous allons prendre deux verres de vin) and describe your experience (Les plats sont délicieux, mais les serveurs ne sont pas très agréables). You’ll also organise a social gathering (Je vous invite à fêter l'anniversaire de mon chien!), as well as discuss music, film and theatre (Je n'ai pas aimé le dernier film avec Dany Boon, et toi?).

In this course, you will strengthen your ability to communicate about events, describe places and landscapes, and express opinions with nuance. Topics include going to a restaurant, talking about cultural projects or films, and choosing or describing a travel destination. Grammar focus includes adverb placement in the passé composé, agreement of the past participle, relative pronouns (qui/que), en and y, and si + imparfait for suggestions. By the end, you’ll be more confident sharing ideas and experiences in French with greater detail and accuracy.

You’ve come so far and you’ve almost completed all the Upper Elementary courses! This course focuses on various aspects of daily life. You will learn how to use the imparfait to make a suggestion (Si on allait au musée ce week-end?), you’ll talk about a successful experience, as well as hygiene products and cosmetics (Si tu n’aimes pas ton shampooing, tu peux prendre le mien). You’ll also talk about the past and practice describing a memory (Quand j’étais enfant, j’avais une passion pour la langue française), understanding stories in the past with temporal markers (Avant d’être un magasin de luxe, c’était un simple marché). Finally, you’ll learn to express cause and consequence to justify an argument (C’est grâce à l’éducation que le monde peut s’améliorer).

Learn how to talk about a city’s features and your feelings about them (J’adore les grands immeubles, mais il y a trop de vent dans cette ville), as well as how to identify criteria to help you choose where to live (J’ai besoin d’être proche d’un hôpital) and how to analyse a city’s ranking (Melbourne est magnifique, mais je pense que Montréal est mieux classée). Also learn how to exchange information about accommodation choices (Ne restez pas dans l’auberge près de la gare), and express your wishes and intentions (J’espère devenir célèbre!).

Your descriptive skills will be sharpened as you'll learn to compare (à la manière de; ressemble à), express enthusiasm using superlatives (la collection d'art contemporain la plus importante), and make both positive and negative comments (ça ne me dit rien; ça a l'air sublime). You'll also learn some more advanced grammatical points such as double pronominalisation (nous vous recommandons ce film) and using the infinitive to express time passing (après avoir fait l'école, il a été engagé).
