In partnership with Brisbane Powerhouse, we are bringing the globally acclaimed "Inside Out" project, created by the renowned French street artist JR, to our city.

What is "Inside Out"?

The "Inside Out" project is a global art initiative that transforms personal messages into powerful art. Created by JR after winning the TED Prize in 2011, this project empowers communities worldwide to stand up for what they believe in and spark local change through public art installations.
Over half a million people in more than 150 countries have participated, addressing topics such as diversity, feminism, racism, climate change, education, and art.

Alliances Françaises across the globe are participating in Inside Out. For our global Action "Les visages de la Francophonie" (Faces of the French-speaking world), we are capturing the portraits of people in different cities and countries to highlight the diversity of the French-speaking world.
Each participating Alliance is creating their own unique installation in their community, but together, our Actions create a giant mosaic that celebrates the people who make up our global and multicultural community.

Our Vision for Brisbane

Imagine the esplanade of the iconic Brisbane Powerhouse adorned with large-scale black-and-white portraits of our community members—from students, teachers and artists to the people you pass on the street. This visual celebration will coincide with a special event featuring Franjo, a French stand-up comedian, enhancing the cultural experience and engagement.

How it Works

Starting now, we're taking portraits of local French speakers, including students and staff of Alliance Française de Brisbane, community members, extending out to Brisbane's diverse French-speaking groups and communities.

Photoshoot sessions will be announced on this page and on our social media accounts. Participation is free; all participants will need to sign a release form.

The day before the Franjo show at Brisbane Powerhouse (Friday 16 August), join us as we start pasting a selection of portraits on the esplanade of Brisbane Powerhouse.

On the day of Franjo's show (Saturday 17 August), attendees will encounter this striking display as they enter the show. There will also be a photo zone to take more portraits as people arrive.

The installation will remain visible at Brisbane Powerhouse's esplanade in the weeks following the show.

Get Involved

We invite all members of our community to participate in this remarkable project. Whether by having your portrait taken, attending the event, being a volunteer or simply spreading the word, your involvement is invaluable.

Additionally, for the first time, we have launched a call for tax-deductible donations to support this project, through the Australian Cultural Fund. While donations are not a requirement to participate, your contributions will help cover the costs of the photoshoots, editing, printing and pasting of the portraits, and post-installation clean-up. Every donation, no matter the amount, makes a difference and helps foster a deeper appreciation for art and multiculturalism in our community.

Join Us in Making History

This project offers a unique opportunity for Brisbane to be part of a global initiative, connecting us with cities and communities around the world through the universal language of art. Let’s come together to make "Les Visages de la Francophonie" a reality and show the world the beautiful, diverse faces of the Francophone community in Brisbane.

We Need Volunteers!

We will be making the collage mural on Friday 16 August and will take all the help we can get to paste more than a hundred portraits in one day. If you are available and would like to be an integral part of the collective realization of this art work, please send an email to pauline@afbrisbane.com and we will be in touch for more details.

Please note that this may involve a bit of physical effort.

For more information and to stay updated on the project, please visit our website regularly. Together, we can bring the "Inside Out" project to life and leave a lasting impact on our city and its cultural landscape.

Thank you for your support and belief in the power of art and community.
