ELEMENTARY 1

So you’ve decided you’d like to learn French. You’re an absolute beginner, and don’t know where to start. Elementary 1 is the course for you! This course serves as a bienvenue to the French language. Throughout this course, you will discover the beauty of the French language, and cover the basics, such as introducing yourself and others (Bonjour, je m’appelle Jean), spelling and counting (un, deux, trois…), and general greetings and politeness (Salut, s’il vous plait, merci beaucoup). You’ll also learn how to ask a question, how to communicate, and explain why you are learning French.

So you’ve caught the French bug, and you’re ready to learn more about this belle langue! Elementary 2 can help you on your journey to linguistic greatness. With a focus on travel and vacations, this course will help you to indicate your destination and origin (Excusez-moi, où est le musée?), naming and locating places (Ah, le Métro, génial!), and other general travel enquiries (accommodation, tourist destinations). You will also talk about your family (J’adore ma femme!), describe people’s physical appearance (Leurs yeux sont très beaux), and your likes and dislikes (J’aime les escargots).
This course is designed for students who have completed Elementary 1 or who have been assessed prior to enrolling.

ELEMENTARY 3

You’re well underway on your journey to grasp the basics of French! With a focus on the day-to-day, Elementary 3 will help you talk about your passions, hobbies, and dreams (J’aime jouer au foot, c’est mon rêve de jouer pour l'Australie), and learn how to ask for and give the time (Quelle heure est-il? Il est 3h30). Additionally, you will be able to discuss your daily routine including explaining basic health issues (Quand je me suis reveillé ce matin, je me suis fait mal au dos), describing your job (Je travaille dans une usine, j’aime beaucoup!), getting out and about, and suggesting, accepting, and refusing an invitation (Merci mais je suis trop occupé pour participer).

ELEMENTARY 4

It’s time to reflect and rewind! Elementary 4 will help you talk about your memories from the past and plans for the future. Learn how to draw upon distant past memories, discuss recent experiences, and look forward to future plans (Quand j’étais jeune, je voulais être un pilote). You will also be able to understand a biographical description of someone’s life (Il a grandit à Nantes, puis a démenagé à Paris), and learn how to describe their physical appearance (Ses cheveux sont longs et son nez est petit). Finally, you’ll learn how to give general advice to people, and also how to understand and plan for travel (Nous allons à Nouméa, où est la crème solaire?).
This course is designed for students who have completed Elementary 3 or who have been assessed prior to enrolling.

ELEMENTARY 5

Standard Courses - Once a week

You’ve come this far, and you’ve almost finished the Elementary program! Elementary 5 is designed to go deeper into aspects of topics covered in Elementary 1-4. Touching on travel and vacations, you’ll be able to describe a holiday location and choose your accommodation (Où est le meilleur hôtel à Québec?). You’ll also cover the day-to-day, including talking about the weather (Il pleut depuis deux semaines), food preferences (J’aime les fraises, mais je n’aime pas les pommes), understanding a menu, grocery shopping (Excusez-moi, dans quelle allée se trouve le lait?), and describing sensations and emotions (Quand je pleure, je suis triste et fatigué). Finally, you’ll practise comparing a past situation with the present (Je jouais au golf, mais maintenant, je fais du vélo), and discussing your reading habits.

ELEMENTARY 6

In the final Elementary level course, it's time to take your French out on the town! Elementary 6 will help you develop the skills to converse whilst shopping and dining out, and to plan your very own soirée. You'll be able to comment on clothes (Quelle jolie chemise rayée!), choose an outfit, and interact with shop assistants (Vous payez par carte?). You’ll learn how to order at a restaurant (Nous allons prendre deux verres de vin) and describe your experience (Les plats sont délicieux, mais les serveurs ne sont pas très agréables). You’ll also organise a social gathering (Je vous invite à fêter l'anniversaire de mon chien!), as well as discuss music, film and theatre (Je n'ai pas aimé le dernier film avec Dany Boon, et toi?).

    You’ve cleared the hurdle of Upper Elementary 1, and you’re well on your way to mastering the French language! Upper Elementary 2 will focus on employment, life experience, and sport. You’ll learn how to look for a job and understand a job offer (Félicitations, bienvenue dans l’équipe!), as well as how to post a job ad as a business owner (Nous cherchons quelqu’un de motivé). Furthermore, you’ll be able to talk about your experiences (Je suis allé au zoo avec mes amis), and interpret advice and security instructions (Après être entré dans l’appartement, rappelle-toi de verrouiller la porte). Finally, you’ll learn how to plan a sporting weekend (Nous jouerons au foot, au tennis, et nous irons nager), and how to describe an unusual trip you’ve had.

    You’re becoming more and more independent with your French every day! Upper Elementary 3 explores language relevant to both the professional and personal spheres. You'll learn how to nail a job interview by answering formal questions and talking about your professional experience (J'ai obtenu un emploi dans cette compagnie en 2017). You'll also discuss film and TV series (Les séries françaises sont vraiment fantastiques!), describe cultural events (Ce que j'aime à la fête de la Musique, c'est la découverte de l'inconnu!) and learn to answer and interpret a survey about cultural habits. What's more, you'll improve your conversation skills by learning to ask for explanations (Pourquoi aimes-tu tellement les croissants?), expresss a judgement, and give advice (Tu devrais étudier un petit peu tous les jours).

You will also talk about relationships, convince people (Vous ne le regretterez pas!) and describe your state of mind. Finally, you’ll practice understanding and giving instructions (Vous faites la vaisselle et vous nettoyez la cuisine), and have some fun with writing a recipe!

    You’ve come so far and you’ve almost completed all the Upper Elementary courses! This course focuses on various aspects of daily life. You will learn how to use the imparfait to make a suggestion (Si on allait au musée ce week-end?), you’ll talk about a successful experience, as well as hygiene products and cosmetics (Si tu n’aimes pas ton shampooing, tu peux prendre le mien). You’ll also talk about the past and practice describing a memory (Quand j’étais enfant, j’avais une passion pour la langue française), understanding stories in the past with temporal markers (Avant d’être un magasin de luxe, c’était un simple marché). Finally, you’ll learn to express cause and consequence to justify an argument (C’est grâce à l’éducation que le monde peut s’améliorer).

Intermediate 1 will help you talk all about your life in the big city. Learn how to talk about a city’s features and your feelings about them (J’adore les grands immeubles, mais il y a trop de vent dans cette ville), as well as how to identify criteria to help you choose where to live (J’ai besoin d’être proche d’un hôpital) and how to analyse a city’s ranking (Melbourne est magnifique, mais je pense que Montréal est mieux classée). Also learn how to exchange information about accommodation choices (Ne restez pas dans l’auberge près de la gare), and express your wishes and intentions (J’espère devenir célèbre!).

      You're well on your way in developing your intermediate skills, and now it's time to dive deep! Intermediate 3 is designed to help you form strong social connections in French and gain a greater appreciation of cultural differences. You'll learn to talk about hobbies and suggest outings (Et si on allait voir un spectacle?), express agreement and disagreement (Je ne suis pas vraiment convaincue), and talk about familial events. You'll also learn about cultural differences and discover new customs (En Inde, les fêtes de mariage durent entre 3 et 5 jours!).

      INTERMEDIATE 4

      You're going strong on your French journey so far, let's keep this momentum going! Intermediate 4 uses the theme of the environment and sustainability to explore new language structures and vocabulary. You will talk about sustainable development and community relationships (Comment se confronter aux problèmes de voisinage?), express approval and reservations (C’est une idée intelligente, mais difficile à mettre en place) and debate a controversial subject. You’ll also learn to discuss ecogestures (Je trie mes déchets) and convince someone to take action (Soyez le changement que vous voulez voir!).

      In Intermediate 5, it’s time to get down to business! This course focuses on the theme of study and work so you will be fully equipped to discuss your career in French. You’ll learn the terms for the different types of qualifications (un diplôme, une licence, un master), speak about your experience and career path (J’ai un long parcours). You’ll also be able to express your motivations (Il est très important pour moi de mettre en pratique mes connaissances) as well as give and understand advice (Il faut être positif et motivé).       In this course, you will discuss about traditional and online media and take a look at fake news. You will analyse the front page of a magazine (Que pensez-vous du thème choisi?), compare media (connaissez-vous les médias participatifs?), identify and analyse misinformation (vrai ou faux?), learn how to gain the attention of an audience (nous nous mettons en scène) by explaining and arguing your opinion.

      Congratulations! You're almost at the end of the intermediate level and you're getting at expressing yourself better each day. In Intermediate 8, you'll be on a whirlwind cultural tour of France as we discuss art, music, architecture and more! Your descriptive skills will be sharpened as you'll learn to compare (à la manière de; ressemble à), express enthusiasm using superlatives (la collection d'art contemporain la plus importante), and make both positive and negative comments (ça ne me dit rien; ça a l'air sublime). You'll also learn some more advanced grammatical points such as double pronominalisation (nous vous recommandons ce film) and using the infinitive to express time passing (après avoir fait l'école, il a été engagé).

This course focuses on all things style and cultural trends, as well as helping you to develop the skills for oral debating. What trends do you like? You will discuss different fashion styles and analyse your relation with looks and clothes (Moi, je privilégie des vêtements confortables), learn about new trends around food (Les 'flexitariens' visent à consommer moins de viande mais sans y renoncer totalement) and out-of-the-box holidays (Qu'en pensez-vous des vacances "staycation"?). Finally, you will practise how to coherently argue your opinion in a debate (Même si le tourisme est mauvais pour l'environnement, il est quand même important pour l'économie).

In Upper Intermediate 3, you’ll develop the skills to summarise a book, give your opinion and compare preferences (Pour moi, L’Étranger est le meilleur livre de Camus). You’ll also practise debating (Lequel est préférable: doublage ou sous-titrage?) and describing famous people’s lives, as well as cultural quirks (Le barbecue australien devrait entrer au patrimoine culturel immatériel de l’UNESCO!). Finally, you’ll discuss creative processes and give your opinion on trends in formal and informal registers (Je trouve ridicule de se mettre la pression pour ça).

        At this point in your journey, you’re ready to dive deep into fascinating conversations! Focusing on the theme of society and social issues, Upper Intermediate 5 will help you express yourself in even more nuanced ways. You will discuss public health in different countries, and take a closer look at the use of gender in the French language. You’ll also practise using subjunctive clauses (Je suis contente que mon professeur m’ait bien expliqué le subjonctif!) as well as the passive voice (Le match a été annulé par le club de football). You’ll also discuss cultural phenomenons including politics and sports, and give nuanced comparisons (Les jeunes communiquent de plus en plus sur les réseaux sociaux).
