Join this workshop to uncover and discuss the experiences of Australian soldiers who bravely fought in France during the First World War.

We'll discuss aspects of their experience such as voluntary enlistment, the harsh realities of trench life, and the poignant journeys of soldiers returning home to Australia, some of whom left behind French orphans. This will be a poignant opportunity to honor and pay tribute to the courageous soldiers who stood in defense of France.

ELEMENTARY 3

You’re well underway on your journey to grasp the basics of French! With a focus on the day-to-day, Elementary 3 will help you talk about your passions, hobbies, and dreams (J’aime jouer au foot, c’est mon rêve de jouer pour l'Australie), and learn how to ask for and give the time (Quelle heure est-il? Il est 3h30). Additionally, you will be able to discuss your daily routine including explaining basic health issues (Quand je me suis reveillé ce matin, je me suis fait mal au dos), describing your job (Je travaille dans une usine, j’aime beaucoup!), getting out and about, and suggesting, accepting, and refusing an invitation (Merci mais je suis trop occupé pour participer).

ELEMENTARY 4

It’s time to reflect and rewind! Elementary 4 will help you talk about your memories from the past and plans for the future. Learn how to draw upon distant past memories, discuss recent experiences, and look forward to future plans (Quand j’étais jeune, je voulais être un pilote). You will also be able to understand a biographical description of someone’s life (Il a grandit à Nantes, puis a démenagé à Paris), and learn how to describe their physical appearance (Ses cheveux sont longs et son nez est petit). Finally, you’ll learn how to give general advice to people, and also how to understand and plan for travel (Nous allons à Nouméa, où est la crème solaire?).

ELEMENTARY 5

Standard Courses - Once a week

You’ve come this far, and you’ve almost finished the Elementary program! Elementary 5 is designed to go deeper into aspects of topics covered in Elementary 1-4. Touching on travel and vacations, you’ll be able to describe a holiday location and choose your accommodation (Où est le meilleur hôtel à Québec?). You’ll also cover the day-to-day, including talking about the weather (Il pleut depuis deux semaines), food preferences (J’aime les fraises, mais je n’aime pas les pommes), understanding a menu, grocery shopping (Excusez-moi, dans quelle allée se trouve le lait?), and describing sensations and emotions (Quand je pleure, je suis triste et fatigué). Finally, you’ll practise comparing a past situation with the present (Je jouais au golf, mais maintenant, je fais du vélo), and discussing your reading habits.

In the final Elementary level course, it's time to take your French out on the town! Elementary 6 will help you develop the skills to converse whilst shopping and dining out, and to plan your very own soirée. You'll be able to comment on clothes (Quelle jolie chemise rayée!), choose an outfit, and interact with shop assistants (Vous payez par carte?). You’ll learn how to order at a restaurant (Nous allons prendre deux verres de vin) and describe your experience (Les plats sont délicieux, mais les serveurs ne sont pas très agréables). You’ll also organise a social gathering (Je vous invite à fêter l'anniversaire de mon chien!), as well as discuss music, film and theatre (Je n'ai pas aimé le dernier film avec Dany Boon, et toi?).

You will discuss public health in different countries, and take a closer look at the use of gender in the French language. You’ll also practise using subjunctive clauses (Je suis contente que mon professeur m’ait bien expliqué le subjonctif!) as well as the passive voice (Le match a été annulé par le club de football). You’ll also discuss cultural phenomenons including politics and sports, and give nuanced comparisons (Les jeunes communiquent de plus en plus sur les réseaux sociaux).

In Upper Intermediate 7, you’ll be diving into conversations about the place of work in our lives, professional culture and careers. You’ll learn about the management practices of French companies, discuss comparisons with your own experience and learn the modes of communication specific to the professional context. You’ll differentiate between direct and indirect speech (On se connait bien / elle dit qu’ils se connaissent bien), as well as standard and familiar registers (Perdre un document / Paumer un document). You’ll practice double pronominalisation to avoid repetition (Vous est-il possible de me la faxer ?), play around with French homonyms (S’est, se, c’est, ses) and learn useful expressions for adding nuance to your point of view (pour autant; sinon… du moins…).

In the final course of Upper Intermediate level, you’re honing the subtleties of French grammar and learning subject-specific vocabulary. In this course, you will discuss education and its development throughout history. You’ll describe the educational model of your country, discuss how it has changed over the years and express opinions on how it could be improved. You’ll describe wishes and goals (C’est une politique qui permette d’ancrer les fondamentaux), and encounter a variety of ways to describe the strength of probability (Il y a des fortes chances; il est peu probable que). You'll also learn some more advanced grammatical points such as suffixes for nominalising verbs into nouns (évoluer / l’évolution) and familiarise yourself with vocabulary for describing tone (ton neutre; ton agacé).
