A1 ELEMENTARY

ELEMENTARY 1

Standard Courses - Twice a week

So you’ve decided you’d like to learn French. You’re an absolute beginner, and don’t know where to start. Elementary 1 is the course for you! This course serves as a bienvenue to the French language. Throughout this ten-week course, you will discover the beauty of the French language, and cover the basics, such as introducing yourself and others (Bonjour, je m’appelle Jean), spelling and counting (un, deux, trois…), and general greetings and politeness (Salut, s’il vous plait, merci beaucoup). You’ll also learn how to ask a question, how to communicate, and explain why you are learning French. This course is designed for complete beginners of French, and no prior knowledge is necessary.

ELEMENTARY 2

Standard Courses - Once a week

So you’ve caught the French bug, and you’re ready to learn more about this belle langue! Elementary 2 can help you on your journey to linguistic greatness. With a focus on travel and vacations, this course will help you to indicate your destination and origin (Excusez-moi, où est le musée?), naming and locating places (Ah, le Métro, génial!), and other general travel enquiries (accommodation, tourist destinations). You will also talk about your family (J’adore ma femme!), describe people’s physical appearance (Leurs yeux sont très beaux), and your likes and dislikes (J’aime les escargots). This course is designed for students who have completed Elementary 1 or who have been assessed prior to enrolling.

ELEMENTARY 3

Standard Courses - Once a week

You’re well underway on your journey to grasp the basics of French! Elementary 3 will help you learn more about general conversational skills and topics. With a focus on the day-to-day, this course will help you talk about your passions, hobbies, and dreams (J’aime jouer au foot, c’est mon rêve de jouer pour l'Australie), and learn how to ask for and give the time (Quelle heure est-il? Il est 3h30). Additionally, you will be able to discuss your daily routine including explaining basic health issues (Quand je me suis reveillé ce matin, je me suis fait mal au dos), describing your job and its requirements (Je travaille dans une usine, j’aime beaucoup!), getting out and about, and suggesting, accepting, and refusing an invitation (Merci mais je suis trop occupé pour participer). This course is designed for students who have completed Elementary 2 or who have been assessed prior to enrolling.

ELEMENTARY 4

Standard Courses - Once a week

It’s time to reflect and rewind! Elementary 4 will help you talk about your memories from the past and plans for the future. Learn how to draw upon distant past memories, discuss recent experiences, and look forward to future plans (Quand j’étais jeune, je voulais être un pilote). You will also be able to understand a biographical description of someone’s life (Il a grandit à Nantes, puis a démenagé à Paris), and learn how to describe their physical appearance (Ses cheveux sont longs et son nez est petit). Finally, you’ll learn how to give general advice to people, and also how to understand and plan for travel (Nous allons à Nouméa, où est la crème solaire?). This course is designed for students who have completed Elementary 3 or who have been assessed prior to enrolling.

ELEMENTARY 5

Standard Courses - Once a week

You’ve come this far, and you’ve almost finished the Elementary program! Elementary 5 is designed to help you go deeper into aspects of what you have already learned in Elementary 1-4. Touching on travel and vacations, you will be able to describe a holiday location and choose your accommodation (Où est le meilleur hôtel à Québec?). You’ll also cover the day-to-day when you recap how to talk about the weather (Il pleut depuis deux semaines), food preferences (J’aime les fraises, mais je n’aime pas les pommes), understanding a menu, going grocery shopping  (Excusez-moi, dans quelle  allée est le lait?), and how to describe sensations and emotions (Quand je pleure, je suis triste et fatigué). Finally, you will touch on how to compare a past situation with the present (Je jouais au golf, mais maintenant, je fais du vélo), and how to discuss your reading habits. This course is designed for students who have completed Elementary 4, or who have been assessed prior to enrolling.

Grammar

This workshop is based on games to effectively learn the present tense. By the end you will be able to introduce yourself and your favorite activities, or daily activities as well as tell a short story.

UPPER ELEMENTARY 5

Travel the world with us! Improve your French while learning more about Switzerland and Québec. Study the conditional so you can express a wish. You will also study more in depth when to use passé composé or imparfait.

Intermediate 1 is behind you, and now you’re well underway into the rest of the program! Intermediate 2 tackles many aspects of life administration, from health, to help, to grievances, to relocation. You’ll learn how to anticipate and deal with health problems (J’ai une douleur dans le bras gauche) and how to understand the formalities of life administration (Vous devez compléter ce formulaire et le remettre à la réception). You’ll also learn how to ask for help (Excusez-moi, comment est-ce que je prends ce bus?), how to write and understand a letter of complaint (Le service dans votre restaurant était terrible), and how to describe similarities and differences between a selection of things. This course is designed for students who have completed Intermediate 1 or who have been assessed prior to enrolling.

INTERMEDIATE 5

Standard Courses - Once a week

This course is designed for students who have completed level B1 Intermediate 4 or been assessed prior to enrolling. In this course, students learn the vocabulary and language structures required to:

  • Give your opinion on various topics such as city life, education
  • Ask questions using different formats (closed questions, with interrogative words)
  • Understand the use of the present participle (ayant, étant, sachant, …)
  • Learn how to use indefinite pronouns (aucun, tout,…) as well as combined relative pronouns (auquel, duquel,…)

This course is designed for students who have completed level B2 Upper Intermediate 8 or been assessed prior to enrolling. In this course, students learn the vocabulary and language structures required to:

  • Discuss your impression of France
  • Talk about living abroad, love and friendship
  • Master the la bise way of greeting in France
  • Use and construct adverbs (for example, gentil à gentiment)
