Losing the Plot: the French loser and masculinity on screen with Professor Phil Powrie

Phil Powrie is Professor of Cinema Studies at the University of Surrey, UK, and one of the world’s leading authorities on French Cinema. In this free talk, Professor Powrie will discuss ways in which a crisis of masculinity has been addressed in recent French Cinema. In recent times, many films have turned their attention towards how this plays out in older age and have used some of France’s most iconic (but ageing) stars to think through this, including Gérard Depardieu, Fabrice Luchini and Johnny Hallyday. Attendees can expect to gain insights not only into questions of what masculinity and the aging body signify today but also how cinema can help us to think through such questions.

Want more French cinema? Alliance Française will be hosting a pre-talk screening of Dans la maison, starring Kristin Scott Thomas and Fabrice Luchini, on Friday 24 August at 6:15pm from our main office in West End.
