Mzaza
MZAZA’s new CD – Journey Over Skin – explores the crossroads between ancient and contemporary melodies originating from France, Spain, the Balkans and the Middle East. Launching the album at the Brisbane Powerhouse on Saturday April 16 the 6-piece Brisbane based outfit will perform with special guests including videographer Andrew Gibbs.
Mzaza formed in 2004 when then inexperienced French-born singer Pauline Maudy was invited to perform at the Valley Fiesta.
“I went on a quest to find musicians who could help me represent my French/Moroccan/Spanish/Sephardic origins through music. Not surprisingly it was by walking around West End – one of Brisbane’s oldest and most culturally-diverse suburbs – that I struck lucky and found my future band mates.” says Maudy.
Maudy sings in French, Spanish and Turkish, combining traditional and contemporary vocal styles and captivating audiences with her onstage presence. The band has been known to feature violin, kamanche tarhu (a spikefiddle of Persian ancestry), guitar, accordion, kaval and ney (Balkan and Turkish end blown flutes), darabuka (Turkish hand percussion), tombak (or 'zarb'; Persian goblet-shaped drum) and bendir (frame drum).
Since Mzaza’s Parliament Of The Birds debut release in April 2009 the six-piece has performed at major music festivals and events including the Woodford Folk Festival, Q150 Shed Tour, and sold out performances at the Brisbane Festival. In 2010 Mzaza supported guitar giants the Grigoryan brothers and their talented counterparts the Tawadros brothers on the Brisbane leg of their national tour.
