DELF & DALF Examinations

What are the DELF and the DALF?

The DELF and DALF are diplomas awarded by the French Ministry of Education to prove the French-language skills of non-French candidates.

There are six independent diplomas, which correspond, respectively, to the six levels of the Council of Europe' s Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).

           CEFRL                    DELF /DALF         User
A1 DELF A1 Basic
A2 DELF A2
B1 DELF B1       Independent
B2 DELF B2
C1 DALF C1 Proficient
C2 DALF C2

Each DELF diploma will asses your four core language skills within a given level. Each DELF exam is made of :

1/ Listening Comprehension
2/ Reading Comprehension
3/ Written Production
4/ Speaking Interaction and Production

DALF Diplomas are also made of assessments on all language skills.

Detailed information about each level of these diplomas, visit the (website of CIEP) Centre International d'Études Pédagogiques),

Who can take the diplomas?

Anyone who is not a native French-speaker and who would like his/her French skills to be recognised for personal or professional purposes can take the exams. These diplomas are also recognised by some French universities and Grandes Ecoles as meeting French language requirements for entry. A DELF B2 for undergraduate entry is usually required by French universities and a DALF C1 for postgraduate entry.

What diplomas should I take?

The 6 DELF and DALF diplomas are independent from one another, so you can take the examination of your choice. You can also sit the examination for a number of diplomas during the same examination session. If you are studying at Alliance or not,  please refer to the level and examinations description on this link in order to decide which exam level you should sit for.

If you are not studying with us and if you are unsure of the level you should take our online placement test to start with and we will contact you to advise you of your level.

If you have any questions on your level, please contact sophie@afbrisbane.com or call us on 3844 4460.

Alliance Francaise de Brisbane is the only DELF and DALF accredited examination centre in Queensland. Delf and Dalf examiners are trained regurlarly and  have followed a compulsory professional training to be accredited by the CIEP. All examiners are French as a foreign language teachers. They value each candidate and apply a can-do evaluation in a friendly, welcoming and reassuring evaluating style. All candidates that sit the DELF or the DALF at Alliance, as well as in the junior and prim sections, always have a great experience and want to sit for the next level as soon as they have progressed more in French.

How can I prepare for the DELF or the DALF examinations?

- Preparing for the DELf A1, A2 or B1
You can prepare yourself by enrolling in our classes or taking private lessons. We do not offer specific preparation for the DELF A1, A2 or B1 apart from the standard courses. However, we do recommend that you take at least one x  2-hour private lesson before registering for the exams. This will allow us to advise you on which exam to sit for and will give you a full understanding on what will be required and how you can practise for the exam.

- Preparing for the DELF or the DALF C1
DELF B2 and DALF C1 are complex exams and it is essential to prepare for the written and oral tasks.

Unfortunately we are unable to offer a DALF C2 course due to lack of interest for this very high level. We recommend to take at least 5 session of 2 hours of private tuition.
