It is housed in the former railway station, the Gare d'Orsay.
It holds mainly French art dating from 1848 to 1915, including paintings, sculptures, furniture, and photography, and is probably best known for its extensive collection of impressionist masterpieces by popular painters such as Monet and Renoir.

The cultural and artistic centre named after Georges Pompidou, built in the old Beaubourg area, has sparked many lively debates about its daring and strange architecture (designed by architects Rogers, Piano and Franchini).
