Welcome to French Sounds, an exploration in French music.

Alliance Française de Brisbane will introduce you to some of the best and brightest artists in contemporary French music, and prove you that there is more to French music that just the accordion!

This first show’s theme is “Mise en bouche”, which translates to “small appetizers”, so bon appétit!

Lets start with Emilie Simon, a French singer and composer of electronic music who is already known to many Australians. She has already toured the country and has had commercial airplay here, particularly with this song "Fleur de saison" from her album "Vegetal", released in 2006.

From a complete different music area, we'll watch DJ Medhi, a French Hip Hop Artist of Tunisian background. He was a former disc jockey and he has remixed various electronic acts and composed soundtracks for many French and international films. Lets watch "I AM SOMEBODY" Featuring CHROMEO from one if his most famous albums "Lucky Boy at Night", released in 2006

Next we have a French dance/rock duo: The Penelopes, based in Paris. Axel Basquiat and Vincent T, as the Penelopes, play in both the rock and the electronic scenes. They had released several singles before releasing their first album, "The Arrogance of Simplicity", in 2006 - which won Best Discovery 2007 band Qwartz Electronic Music Award. They have played throughout the world. Lets look at "In a Storm".

Our last video is from the very interesting group SLANG, coming from Brussels! They are a trio which describes itself as "Ethno-Coltranian-Rock" with each member bringing their musical ideas and background to the group. This produces a mixture of jazz, funk, world music and rock. Let's watch their video: "Make it Happen", from their Album: "Its on the Way" which was released in 2005.

We hope you enjoyed these appetizers!
Our next 5 programs will focus on particular aspects of French music, Rock, Jazz, and Hip Hop...
Don't miss our next show which will be devoted to female French artists - from rock to lounge.

See you next time, Au revoir!
