People of…

People of… is a visual tour to opposing yet intertwined parts of the world. Through his photographic lens, Mr. Corpart juxtaposes dramatically opposed societies, bringing about their differences but also their similarities.
Using the backdrop of a singular street (namely pedestrian walkways), Mr. Corpart captures the essence of key cities, their people, and their evolution. The people, faces without names, are the actors of the city’s life.
The exhibit currently encompasses images from Melbourne, Panama, Bogota, and Quito. The exhibit is a growing tribute to people of the world and is expected to include Lima, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, and Mexico by year-end 2013.

Mr. Guillaume Corpart Muller is an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer.

Cuba 2012: Pain That Doesn’t Kill You Doesn’t Last Forever

A photo exhibition by Jacques Maudy

From 5 May 2012 to 3 June 2012
Queensland Centre for Photography

Jacques Maudy is a Brisbane based photographer and a native Spanish speaker. He recently spent three weeks in Cuba documenting the radical changes that are taking place both socially and economically.

Raul Castro’s project is to change Cuba from a 100% state run economy to a model like China where people are allowed to prosper but are controlled with a tight political fist. The government plans to shift 1.3 million workers – that is approximately 25% of the active population - from state employment to the private economy within a single year in a country where private enterprises and the entrepreneurship culture do not yet exist.

The changes are already being implemented but the Cuban people are not yet aware of the scope of the shift. A massive program of training in accounting is underway in every town. The official discourse is still "we will never give up our revolutionary principals" when in fact Fidel Castro's dream of the New Man has failed and will die with him.

Many of the photographs Jacques took in February 2012 will be impossible to take in a year’s time. Cuba, one of the last fossil "socialist" economies with North Korea, will be a hot topic in the world news in the next few months.

Modern Woman: Daughters and Lovers 1850 — 1918
Drawings from the Musée d’Orsay, Paris.
From 24 March to 24 June 2012
Queensland Art Gallery

An exhibition of drawings from the Musée d’Orsay, Paris, by artists working in France in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, will be showing exclusively at the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG).

It celebrates the changing roles of women during the Belle Époque as depicted by leading artists of the time such as Edgar Degas, Pierre—Auguste Renoir, Edouard Vuillard, Edouard Manet, Camille Pissarro, Pierre Bonnard, Auguste Rodin, Berthe Morisot and Jean François Millet. These artists increasingly abandoned idealised representations of the female figure, and turned to women from a diverse range of socioeconomic backgrounds, depicting them in their family lives and domestic activities, as well as in the public realm as spectators, performers and workers. Through these fascinating drawings, we see French society undergoing radical transformation.

Visitors are invited to take part in the extensive public programs associated with the exhibition exploring the contributions of artists to French society during the Belle Epoque period. Gain insight into the progressive social backdrop of the time with academic lectures and artists talks starting from opening weekend.

“Guest Room of One's Own"
Mixed Media Works
By Caro Toledo
Gallery of the Alliance Française of Brisbane

01 DECEMBER 2011 - 27 JANUARY 2012

Caro Toledo started collaging to make sense of the new world she found herself in after immigrating to Australia from France. It was an immediate, tangible way to transpose emotions and observations. Currently finishing a Master of Art, Toledo explores the domestic realm and looks at the games of intimacy, relationships dynamics and the spaces between reason and emotion.

The appropriation and recontextualisation of nostalgic imagery to which seemingly-unrelated text is added, bring ambiguity and humour to create new meanings.

Toledo’s work is indebted to the tradition of Women’s Work, time after time devalued, and, through the occasional use of embroidery, pays homage to women whose roles in the home were not heeded.
