THE WAR OF THE BUTTONS
Director: Yann Samuell
Cast: Alain Chabat, Eric Elmosnino, Mathilde Seigner, Fred Testot, Salomé Lemire
Schedule : Thu 15 Mar - 11am / Fri 16 Mar - 10 am / Thu 22 Mar - 10 am
Yr 8-10
From the furtive imagination of writer/director Yann Samuell comes the smash-hit adaptation of Louis Pergaud’s classic 1912 novel (a book long on the French curriculum and reprinted over thirty times!) about the rivalry between children from two villages.
A gang of boys, aged 7 to 14 led by the intrepid Lebrac (Vincent Bres) are at war with the kids of the neighbouring township, their sworn enemies. In this uncompromising battle of honour and allegiances that’s been kept alive for generations, humiliation is the most fearsome defeat and no tactic is too extreme - even if it necessitates fighting naked or accepting the help offered by Lanterne (Salome Lemire) - a girl! She’s the gang’s new recruit, a tomboy full of panache and ingenuity – and it seems victory could now just be a skipping stone’s throw away. But it’s not easy to wage war without getting c aught by your parents…

Between light comedy and drama, this debut film from the Coulin sisters is based on a true story. The film recounts how the accidental pregnancy of a young teenager leads to an epidemic of teen pregnancies.
The girls are all from the same school and all fall pregnant at the same time. First of all, their collective choice establishes a form of teenage utopia, as they plan a life without restraint, a life for themselves and their future children. It’s a dream, which harks back to the naïve sense of optimism typical of these tender teenage years.
But this act of emancipation also highlights a disturbing sense of feminism. When it comes to the option of abortion, parents of girls aged under eighteen are relatively powerless. In a legal sense, the girls themselves are fully responsible for this decision. This powerful film subsequently tracks the changes in the minds and bodies of these young girls, reminding us in an entirely unconventional way of what can happen on the journey to becoming a woman. |

Two worlds collide in this contemporary drama from Cédric Klapisch (L’Auberge Espagnole). Working-class single mother France (Karin Viard) finds herself at a crossroads when she loses her job when the local factory closes following a corporate merger. Mother of three daughters and separated from their father, she must find a solution and look for a new job. With few prospects in her small seaside town, she moves to Paris and secures a position as a housekeeper for Steve (Gilles Lellouche) - a handsome workaholic and successful businessman who leads a lavish lifestyle in Paris. Dedicated to her work and generous, France soon finds herself looking after Steve’s young son, whose mother has decided to leave for a couple of months. But there is more to Steve than meets the eye. What really lies behind his bravado? Will France accept everything?
With its comedic edge, this engaging social commentary reflects upon the realities of today’s power-hungry, money-driven society and the larger consequences of a single decision.

One morning, Sarah (Audrey Tautou) vanishes, leaving her husband Paul (Little White Lies’ Benoît Magimel) and their young son and daughter reeling, without a word as to her whereabouts or a clue about when she will return. As time passes, Paul anxiously but tenderly tries to sustain some sense of normalcy and after a year, in an attempt to start over, he reluctantly returns to his coastal home town. There, he takes a job as a driving instructor, reunites with his estranged brother and befriends a local police officer (Isabelle Carré). But still he dreams of Sarah, refusing to let go.
Why did she leave, and will she return?
