Tour De France
A major weekend for French culture in Brisbane
The success of the Bastille Day celebrations was overwhelming! It was staggering to see the level of interest in French culture by the people of Brisbane
. As one of the major events held during the weekend before 14 July, our special family day event in the Roma Street Parklands was visited by over a thousand people; far more than had been expected. Our event, which had been intended to focus on educational games for children (with some refreshments for sale), had been publicised by many media outlets that were promoting the extensive range of Bastille Day events in Brisbane.
This, it must be said, lead to a confused impression of the event itself. Unhappily, it became
obvious that many people did not understand that our day was specially for children, and perhaps many had confused it with the French Affair Expo, which was held during the same weekend. Judging by the massive crowd that attended the Expo (of which we were a partner) Brisbane clearly has an intense interest in French culture.
This level of interest came as a delightful, although overwhelming, surprise. It certainly has shown us that we need to plan for a bigger scale for the future!
To those who came expecting a French fair, we would like to apologise. While the demand for such an event became evident that day, and discussion of holding one in the future has already begun, our Tour de France was intended as a fun day for children and their parents with games designed to introduce everyone to aspects of France and its culture. Happily, so many people had a good day that we certainly consider the day to be a major success.
