The DELF and DALF qualifications are under the authority of the Commission Nationale du DELF et du DALF [National Commission for DELF and DALF] whose headquarters are at the CIEP. The 6 diplomas that make up DELF and DALF are completely independent. This means that candidates can register for the examination of their choice, according to their level. At each level the four language skills are assessed:
DELF Prim is the first level in the DELF / DALF series of certificates awarded by the French Ministry of Education for proficiency in French as a Foreign Language. DELF Prim is intended for children who are beginners in French as a Foreign Language and who are either undertaking studies corresponding to the French elementary level or are the right age to undertake such studies under the regulations applicable in their country. Successful candidates receive a certificate identical to the general public version. DELF Prim is composed of individual certificates corresponding to the initial levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). The tests are built on the same model as the DELF for adults, but with topics adapted to suit the age group in question.

The junior version of DELF has the same basic structure as the standard DELF. Only the topics are different: the materials take into account the interests of young people. It can only be taken by children of secondary-level age. The diploma awarded is identical to the standard DELF diploma where the examinations are independent.
