Les Petits - 3 to 6 years old

Alliance Française de Brisbane offers the natural way to experience French language and culture from the earliest age. 3 to 6 year olds are offered a fun introduction to French in a friendly and supportive environment for an hour per week over ten weeks. It uses specifically adapted teaching materials complemented by the Resource Centre. This class gives your child an opportunity to have fun while learning a new language. In a kindy-like environment, your child will be exposed to the French language at an age when their minds are likened to a sponge.

Eight to ten topics are set for each term and all class activities revolve around them. The topics are chosen for the interest they arouse among children:
-their own person: family, body parts, birthday, feelings...
-their environment: house, park, city, shops, numbers & quantities, food, time, weather...
-their interests: relating to others, animals, school, activities, sport, imagination, holidays, toys...

The topics will be explored through words and related sentences (about 120 per term). These words are firstly introduced, then repeated in the class and  scaffolded in the following ones.

Class activities comprise of singing, dancing, story telling, drawing, craft, counting, video watching and playing interactive games with the other children. They appeal to all their senses which helps the memorisation process. Their variety answers all the different learning styles. At the same time, they are part of a set-up routine that makes the children feel more confident and pro-active, and eases the insertion of newcomers.

Parents are more than welcome to stay for their child’s first lesson, but after that, it is not recommended that parents stay in the classroom. The teacher will give an account of the children's progress on week 10 of each term and can always be contacted to give a feedback on the children progress.

Material:

Children will receive two books per term included in the class fee. These books come from a selection made by “L'école des Loisirs” a unique publishing company extensively used in French kindies and primary schools. The story books will be used in the class as a supportive resource.

Les Grands - 7 to 11 years old

Alliance Française offers classes that run for an hour and a half per week over ten weeks in a friendly and supportive environment and use specifically adapted teaching materials complemented by its Resource Centre.

The children will use a textbook and will progress through the book all year round (at a rhythm of 2 units and a half per term). It presents different themes
chosen for the interest they arouse among children: school and social activities, birthdays, food, animals,....They frequently review their knowledge of the French language, building upon their existing skills with the added inclusion of grammar (intuitive grammar) and vocabulary. Children participate in class discussions, where more complex sentence structures are introduced and everyday vocabulary is utilised. The children also participate in dialogue reading, and they are expected to be able to work together on group activities as well as independently.

To make the class a special place where children will come in and out with a smile, class activities comprise of singing, dancing, story telling, craft and playing games with the other children.

The teacher will give an account of the children's progress on week 5 and week 10 of each term.

Les Ados - 12 to 17yo

Alliance Française offers extra curricular tuitions for students who study French at school, focusing on conversational skills. Learning implies repetition. Alliance offers this opportunity to the teens to reuse what they know in a different way thereby extending their learning. Alliance Francaise has also developped classes for complete beginners of French who have not got the opportunity to take it at school. The classes are 1.5 hour per week over ten weeks.

Teachers at Alliance are all French-speakers up on spoken French and the students will benefit from their native pronunciation.

Our primary goal is to give learners enough confidence to cope with real life situations. Therefore the focus is on activities that maximise opportunities to use French in a conversational way. This is achieved through meaningful exercises, such as creative role-plays, simulations, surveys, projects, discussions and task based activities. The emphasis is on speaking and listening, although reading and writing are also important parts of the courses. Naturally, grammar, is not neglected, but the focus remains on getting the message across. Since the primary objective is the rapid development of speech and comprehension skills, class sizes are limited to a maximum of 14 students.
Material: Adosphère1, 2 or Amis et compagnie 3,4 for higher levels.
