Justice James Douglas
Justice James Douglas was appointed to the Queensland Supreme Court in November 2003. Before then he spent twenty-seven years in practice as a barrister in Queensland, becoming a Queen’s Counsel in 1989. He was a Council member of the Bar Association of Queensland and its President from 1999 to 2001. He practised at the bar in a wide variety of jurisdictions covering many aspects of civil practice in particular both at trial and appellate level and including a number of investigations of insolvent public companies and some contested company takeover battles.
He completed degrees in Arts and Law at the University of Queensland, was the Rt Hon. Sir Harry Gibbs' Associate and completed a post graduate Ll.B. at Cambridge University.
He was editor of the Queensland Reports from 1986 to 1991 and a member of the Legal Committee of the Companies and Securities Advisory Committee from 1992 to 1994. He is also a member of the American Law Institute and the International Academy of Comparative Law.
From 1990 to 1996 he was Chairman of the Queensland Theatre Company and from 1989 to 1996 Chairman of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra's Advisory Board. He was the past president of Alliance Française de Brisbane Inc. He is married with two children.
